Junior Cyclists - preparing for this weeks Race!

ree

Following on from our fantastic first session, Week 2 of the Junior Development Program at Sunshine Coast Cycling Club was another huge success! Our enthusiastic young riders were back on their bikes, tackling the vital skills of cornering and braking.

This week was all about getting confident and controlled when approaching and navigating turns – essential for safe and competitive racing! We focused on key techniques like 'looking through the turn' to anticipate where they're going and the crucial 'outside pedal down' rule for stability and lean. Seeing the kids grasp these concepts and apply them in our weaving and circle drills was incredibly rewarding. They’re already showing so much improvement in handling their bikes with precision!

Race Prep: 8 Minutes + 1 Lap!

The real highlight was our mini race prep session: an exhilarating 8 minutes plus one final lap! We split the groups and watched them work together, practicing pace control and setting each other up. Everyone gave it an incredible final push for the line, and the smiles that lit up their faces at the finish were pure gold! It's moments like these that truly show their budding competitive spirit and pure joy for the sport.

First Race This Weekend!

A massive thank you to all the parents and riders for their dedication! We're thrilled with their progress and can't wait to see what they achieve this weekend, as the first race is on 31st Aug at Skippy Park! This week, we talked a lot about race tactics, including attacking, drafting, and how to ride smart in a bunch. They're ready to put everything they've learned into practice.

This is what it's all about—preparing these future champions for safe, fun, and competitive racing. By mastering skills like controlled braking, smooth cornering, and getting a taste of sprint finishes, we're building a strong foundation that will help them excel and enjoy every moment.
